Vrishaketu shoots Babhruvahana in the sky

anoniem, 1800 - 1899

Babhruvahana is depicted above, surrounded by the magical crescent-shaped arrow weapon and flanked by Sun and Moon. The five arrows in Sun's hand will be subsequently given to him. The personage at the bottom of the paintings is probably Vrishaketu. Alternatively, it might be Pradyumna (son of Balarama). The painting might illustrate the story of Babhruvahana as given by the Sripandavapratapa by Sridhara (c. 1658-1729). A better-known variant of the story is given by the Asvamedha Parvan of the Mahabharata. Paintings as this one were used by itinerant bards (chitrakathis) to accompany their recitations.
