Entry

Wooden frame model of a ship in scaffolding, mounted on a base with an inclined plane representing a slipway.

The model has no planking but shows frames, which consist of nine parts. The gun ports, as far as can be discerned, amount to a total of sixty-six on three decks; the outline of which is only indicated by the gun ports, except for the lower deck, where beams have been fitted. The stern has a round tuck with two gun ports and a hollow counter. No details are provided of a taffrail or quarter galleries; at this stage of construction the stern is still unplanked. The sheer rises towards both ends, only one wale is indicated. The hull is round with a flat middle section.

A remarkable feature are the sister keelsons instead of the single keelson.

The model was purchased by Jochem Pietersz Asmus (1755-1837) from the family of the shipwright Schelte Hasselaar for his private collection.3HNA 2.01.29.02 Dept. Marine, Aanhangsel I, inv. no. 20, La. E no. 12. It was transferred from Amsterdam to The Hague in 1818.4HNA 1.01.47.29 Admiraliteitscolleges, Collectie Van der Hoop, inv. no. 187, nota october 1818. It is doubtful whether this model was built by Schelte Hasselaar,5J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 497. as the sister keelsons are a typical feature of the Van Zwijndregt's of Rotterdam.
