Arama Norisue (vermeld op object), ca. 1790 - ca. 1800

Twee speelkaarten met gedicht. Op één kaart is een zittende dichter afgebeeld, met pijp in de rechter hand. Hij schermt zijn gezicht af met een waaier waarop een hoveling is afgebeeld. Deze kaarten werden gebruikt in een spel gebaseerd op een anthologie van honderd gedichten samengesteld in 1235: de Hyakunin isshu.

Biography

Arama Norisue was an occasional amateur designer.

Entry

Two playing cards used in the memory game based on the poetry anthology A Hundred Poems by a Hundred Poets, Hyakunin isshu, compiled by Fujiwara Teika in 1235. One of the cards has a portrait of a seated poet hiding his face behind an open fan decorated with the portrait of a courtier, the other is inscribed with a poem.

The signature Arama Norisue, 'drawn by myself’, jiga, would indicate that the poet also made the design, a common practice with early surimono.

The portrait has the note 'Poem to be read for the beginning of the Spring', Haru no hajime ni yomeru kyoka.
