Hobo of schalmei
Richard Haka, ca. 1680
De hobo werd uitgevonden door Franse instrumentenmakers in dienst van Lodewijk XIV. Door zijn kenmerkende geluid werd de hobo snel een belangrijk onderdeel van Europese orkesten. Franse instrumenten werden in de Nederlandse Republiek geïmporteerd. Maar omstreeks 1680 was er ook in de Republiek een bloeiende gemeenschap van instrumentenmakers, vooral in Amsterdam, die een paar van de rijkst versierde hobo's ooit hebben gemaakt.
