The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. Above the wale the side is planked and painted black. Nine shadowed gun ports are painted on the side, indicating one continuous gun deck, highlighted by a horizontal yellow band. At the forecastle and stern two raised bulwarks with square hances are indicated. The sheer rises slightly to both ends. One wale and one sheer rail are indicated. The bow features an empty beakhead and a black knighthead. The stern has a round tuck, a hollow counter and a taffrail. Below the stern a round-headed rudder of the Soetermeer-type is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.
The 18-gun brig Meermin, 31.5 metres long, was built by Cornelis Soetermeer (1782-1842) in Flushing from 1828 to 1830. Obreen describes this model as a brig, and the Meermin was also listed as such in Navy records. A brig usually has only two masts, whereas this model has three. Meermin sank while being heeled in Curaçao in 1848, but was raised and served in the Navy for three more years before it was decommissioned in 1851.
