Cartridge with 6-Pounder Cannon Ball

Cartridge consisting of a brass cylindrical body, sealed at the flat ends with wooden disks, and containing a ball projectile. A third wooden disk, concealed in the cartridge, keeps the cannon ball in place at one end. The other half of the cartridge is empty. It has a small slide, through which the charge can be inserted and which has to be removed when loading in order to enable the spark to enter. The cartridge has a brass strap on the exterior of one end, and another strap inside: their purpose is unknown.

This cartridge goes with the model of the breech-loading gun (NG-MC-781) proposed by F.H. Ampt on 2 June 1829.²²HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 20/7/1829 N54. The artillery specialists, amongst them Sesseler, turned down Ampt’s proposals.³³HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 24/9/1829 N70.
