Polychromed and rigged frame model of a three-masted ship, on a stand.
The model has a lower deck and a main deck which is slightly raised behind the mainmast. The bow features a gold painted scroll with leaves as a billethead, the beakhead has four seats of ease. The stern has a raked sternpost, a round tuck, a hollow counter, a single-storey taffrail with carvings of pilasters and a red shield between foliage scrolls. The single-storey quarter galleries are decorated with pilasters and a flower beneath, a privy on top surrounded by a railing. Below the stern is a straight, square-headed rudder and a tiller with steering tackle on deck. The model is fitted with two anchors, two launches, a windlass, a brake pump, three pieces of spare timber on the knights, a winch near the mainmast, a binnacle and a companionway. Below deck the model is ceiled and panelled with berths and a galley. The sheer rises towards the stern, the model has two wales and a sheer rail. The hull form has a sharp S-shape and is painted white below the waterline. The main and mizzen channels are continuous. Before the main channel the entering steps are visible. All ten guns are missing.
The model was made by Petrus van der Loo (1806-1864) under the supervision of Jochem Pietersz Asmus (1755-1837).1 It has a very detailed three-masted rig with furled sails. Both the foremast and mainmast have trysail-masts. The mizzen boom has a boom for a driver.
The 8 to 10-gun transport Prins Frederik Willem Hendrik, 33.70 metres long, was built in Middelburg in 1832. It served mainly in the Dutch West Indies. On a return voyage from the Dutch East Indies in 1856 the ship was declared unfit in Simonstown (South Africa) and sold out of the service the following year.2
