The port of Marseille
Germaine Krull (mentioned on object), before 1935
The book on the city of Marseille, which includes this photograph, belongs to a strong topographical tradition in photography, namely the city portrait. The port of Marseille was a popular subject among modernist photographers, including Germaine Krull, László Moholy-Nagy, and Man Ray. The swiftly developing industrial landscape of bridges, ships, and buildings lent itself perfectly to their experiments with form.
