Brisé Fan

anonymous, c. 1795

A brisé (French: ‘broken’) fan consists of ivory sticks connected at the top and bottom. The central scene is based on a painting by the Swiss artist Angelica Kauffmann. In the late 18th century, her works were extremely popular and frequently copied.

Description
Brisé waaier met 26 benen. Opengewerkt ivoor met bloemranken tegen een achtergrond van zeer fijne verticale lijnen. Boven het lint afwisselend een vogel, een bloemtak en een paddestoel. Onder het lint zijn in de decoratie drtie velden utigespaard die zijn beschilderd. In het middelste veld twee vrouwen en een man, in de beide kleinere velden terweerszijde een vrouw. De cartouches zijn omgeven door vergulde ornamentale banden. Op de achterzijde zijn de velden beschilderd met bloemtakken. De sluitbenen zijn gedecoreerd met in relieëf gesneden paviljoens in een landschap.
