Jan Verkade (signed by artist), 1893

The Zaandam painter Jan Verkade was a member of Les Nabis, a group of French painters around Paul Gauguin in Brittany. They had a marked preference for subjects taken from traditional village life, and worked in a colourful, stylized manner. In 1892 Verkade left for Fiesole in Italy, where he would live for three years. His memories of Brittany and appreciation of 15th-century Italian painting resulted in this charming ‘Breton Madonna.’

    Voorstelling van een meisje uit het Bretonse dorp Saint Nolff, en face, tegen een achtergrond van groene heuvels en pijnbomen met een hoge horizon. Rechtsboven een witte kerk, die de kerk van Saint Nolff voorstelt, alleen in plaats van een grijs dak heeft deze nu een rood dak. Het meisje is gekleed in een zwarte versie van de traditionele dracht van haar streek, met de opvallende gevouwen witte kap. De vormgeving is gestileerd. De techniek is deels pointilistisch (weergave van het gezicht) en met korte verticale penseelstreken
