Actor Near a Brazier

Torii Kiyonobu (II) (mentioned on object), 1742

Attention was sometimes lavished on creating handcoloured prints. This is an urushi-e, or lacquer print. To imitate the glossy finish of lacquer, a special type of glue was applied to the black area representing the wide belt (obi). Additionally, embossing was employed to create a textured pattern on the fabric and metallic powder was sprinkled along the edge of the hearth.
