Stadholder William IV received this box in 1749 as the new governor of the Dutch West India Company (WIC). The decorations on the box refer to the WIC’s activities: trading in gold, ivory, and people. A European can be seen to the left of the man with the elephant’s tusk. He gives money to another man while pointing to two adults and a child. It is one of the few known images of the slave trade.
