Kris of King William I

anonymous, 1835

This kris was presented to King William I by the Sultan of Madura, Cakra Adinigrat VIII, in 1835. In an accompanying letter, the sultan expressed a thousand thanks for his appointment as a Commander in the Order of the Dutch Lion. His gift to the king was a kris ‘made at my kraton [= palace]’. Two of the 117 diamonds decorating the scabbard are missing.

Description
Kris met rechte kling die versierd is met de pamor-techniek. De bovenkant van de kling heeft gouden decoraties van plantmotieven. Madurees gevest met een greepvatting (selut) van gouden drijfwerk. De houten schede heeft een gouden overschede die gedecoreerd is met fijn drijfwerk van plantmotieven en vogels. De gouden schede heeft bovenaan een ornament in de vorm van een demon-kop, Boma, omringd door plantmotieven, waarboven een kroon. Deze kop was oorspronkelijk bezet met 117 diamanten. Twee diamantjes van het rozetje op het voorhoofd ontbreken. De schedemond (wranga) is gemaakt van vlekkenhout (kayu pelet).
