beschilderd hout, riet, papier, h 131.5cm × w 34.5cm. More details

The province of Aceh on the island of Sumatra fiercely resisted the expansion of the Dutch colonial regime. This shield was seized during an attack on a Dutch settlement. It bears a label with an inscription that translates as: ‘Shield of the Acehnese who in Dec. 1876 killed 1st Lieutenant Regensburg on the banteng of Lembu. Acehnese also dead’. The Aceh War lasted from 1873 to 1914 and more than 100,000 people lost their lives.
