Hendrik Casimir was the son of Ernst Casimir. When his father lost his life in 1632, Hendrik succeeded him as stadholder of Friesland, Drenthe, and Groningen. Hendrik also met a violent death: he was shot from his horse in the Flemish city of Hulst in 1640. This is the hat he was wearing at the time.
