Model of a 16-pounder howitzer on a gun carriage

Model van een houwitser op rolpaard. De houwitser is 19,6 cm lang en heeft een kaliber van 33 mm. Op de loop zijn de inscripties gegraveerd, samen met gekruiste ankers en palmtakken. De loop heeft twee oren. Het zeer korte rolpaard bestaat uit twee parallelle wangen met twee trappen, verbonden door een verticaal kalf, een dwarsbalk en de aslijven; op de aslijven ligt de zoolplaat. Het richtblok kan op de zoolplaat heen en weer geschoven worden en in verschillende standen vastgezet door middel van pennen in een rand aan de binnenkant van de wangen. De aslijven zijn aan de wangen bevestigd met beugels, die verwijderd kunnen worden. De dubbele houten wielen zijn alle van gelijke afmetingen. Schaal 1:6 (schaal op model).

Model of a howitzer on a carriage.

The howitzer is 19.6 cm long and has a 33 mm calibre. Written inscriptions are engraved on the barrel, along with crossed anchors and palm branches. It has two dolphins. The very short carriage consists of two parallel cheeks with two steps, connected by a transom, a cross-beam and the axletrees; the stool bed rests on the axletrees. The bolster can be set at different positions on the stool bed, secured to the inner face of the cheeks with pins in a rim. The axletrees are attached to the cheeks with braces, which can be removed. The model has double, equally sized wooden trucks.

The barrel belongs to a series of models with the same type of inscription. The model is mentioned by Jochem Pietersz Asmus (1755-1837) in 1807 as belonging to his private collection.3HNA 2.01.29.02 Dept. Marine, Aanhangsel I, inv. no. 20, La. H no. 13. The monogram on the barrel refers to the Admiralty of Rotterdam (Maze), which, however, no longer existed in 1800.

The model does not correspond to the measurements of the carriage as given in a table of a 16-pounder stone howitzer made for Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen (1735-1819) in 1782.4Table with Measurements of the Carriage for a 16. pnd. Stone Howitzer, Made for the Admiral J.H. van Kinsbergen, Febr. 1782, manuscript in KMA 15/4a. The calibre is considerably larger than those for the ordnance of iron projectiles of the same weight. The carriages were not stable and often toppled over.
