Model of a Cart for Rope Making

Wagentje voor het touwslaan, bestaande uit een messing frame op wielen, voorzien van een raderwerk. Het grote wiel van het raderwerk staat in de lengterichting opgesteld en heeft een groot aantal in concentrische cirkels aangebrachte gaten voor steunen, waarop touw wordt opgerold. Het wagentje heeft slechts één draaihaak.

Model of a cart for ropemaking, consisting of a brass frame with a gear train, on four wheels. The large wheel of the gear train, set longitudinally, has a large number of holes in concentric circles for supports on which a rope can be coiled up. Just one whirl is mounted on the cart.

The identification of the model is based on elimination. This cart was used for the manufacture of patent rope, of which all the strands were laid with the same tension. Its North American origin, as stated by Obreen,1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 60. is confirmed by Marestier.2J.B. Marestier, Mémoire sur les bateaux à vapeur des États-Unis d’Amérique, avec appendice sur diverses machines relatives à la marine, Paris 1824, pp. 263-69, pl. XVI, figs. 145-47. Both William May Jr, in his correspondence with his brother Job Seaburne May (1765-1827),3HNA 2.05.15.03 Min. Buitenlandse Zaken, Consulaat-Generaal Londen, inv. no. 179, 13/5/1823. and Obreen use the word ‘equalizing machine’ in connection with this model.
