Silver Cup of the Society 'Het Metalen Kruis'

Zilveren bokaal in de vorm van een platte schaal op een schacht bestaande uit een anker, waaromheen een waterspuwende fantasie vis en de ankerketting gekronkeld. Tegen de onderkant van de schaal een Jacobsschelp en een kruis omringd door een eikentak en een tak met oranjeappeltjes. De stempelvormige voet is omsnoerd door een kabel en een riem met gesp, waarop het opschrift is gegraveerd. Gemerkt met het meesterteken van Van Kempen, 1ste gehalte grote werken na 1814 en Minervakop. De etui en oorkonde in de inventaris vernoemd zijn niet meer aanwezig.

Entry

Silver cup in the form of a shallow dish on a stem, which consists of an anchor with a chain and a fantastical fish squirting water, twisted around the shank. The underside of the dish is ornamented with a Jacob’s shell (coquille) and a cross (the military decoration ‘Metalen Kruis’, i.e. metal cross) surrounded by an oak twig and a twig with oranges. The edges of the foot are ornamented with a cable and a belt and buckle, on which the inscription is engraved. The case and document mentioned in the inventory are missing.

The society ‘Het Metalen Kruis’ was founded in memory of the Dutch-Belgian War of 1830-32.3HNA 2.19.042.59 Vereniging Het Metalen Kruis. The Metalen Kruis was a medal awarded to soldiers that served in this war. The cup was offered by the Society to the screw steamer bearing the same name, which came into service in 1863. The cup was added to the Navy Model Room on 22 November 1880 after the screw steamer Het Metalen Kruis had been sold out of service while in India.4HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, inv. no. 4052.
