5-cm Shell

Constructie Werkplaats, 1863

5 cm granaat met percussiebuis. De granaat heeft een cylindervorimig gepunt lichaam, met zinken nokken voor vier trekkende velden. In de punt is een percussiebuis met messing beschermkap geschroefd, met een leertje.

Entry

A 5-cm shell with percussion fuse.

The shell is cylindrical and pointed, with zinc studs for four grooves. In the nose a percussion fuse with a brass protective cap has been screwed; the fuse has a leather gasket.

This shell was used with 5-cm rifled muzzle-loaders, which were developed from the smooth bore 1-pounder swivel of French design. The proposal to adapt these guns for rifled ammunition was first formulated by Head of Artillery W. de Fremery in 1860, and in December 1862, successful trials were held with shells and canister shot.
