Model of gun ports for a floating battery

Rijkswerf Willemsoord, 1861

Model van een deel van de scheepswand met twee geschutpoorten, op een gronplank. De poortluiken zijn van metaal en in een boven- en onderhelft verdeeld, die naar buiten toe opengaan en in gesloten stand een ronde opening laten voor het geschut. De luiken van de ene poort hebben de scharnieren aan de buitenkant, voor de andere zitten zij aan de binnenkant. Haken houden de luiken in de open stand. Schaal 1:25 (afgeleid).

Model of part of the ship’s side with two gun ports, mounted on a rectangular base.

The shutters are made of metal and are divided into upper and lower halves opening outwards, leaving a round aperture for the muzzle when closed. The shutters of one gun port have their hinges on the outside, the other on the inside. Hooks secure the shutters in position when open.

The model represents a proposal for armour-plated gun ports by P.A. Bruijn in response to a request for smaller gun ports fore and aft on the 32-gun floating battery Neptunus in 1861. This proposal for armoured shutters against rifle fire and grapeshot was accepted for all floating batteries.
