Lacquerware was a prized luxury product, with its rich gold decorations on a dark black background. This decorative dish was a special order as it bears the coat-of-arms of Joan van Huydecoper van Maarsseveen. In addition to being burgomaster of Amsterdam, he was director of the VOC, and so had the right connections to order lacquerware in Japan.
