Art cabinet

anonymous, c. 1627 - c. 1630

This piece is a veritable princely art collection in miniature. All manner of materials and artefacts have been incorporated into it. Originally the many drawers and compartments contained works of art and natural specimens. They were assembled by the Augsburg merchant, art dealer and diplomat Philipp Hainhofer. The whole constituted a reflection in miniature (microcosm) of the universe (macrocosm). The loose contents were stolen in 1631.

  • Description

    Rechthoekige kunstkast belijmd met ebbenhout, met afgeschuinde hoeken en staande op een breder voetstuk op een onderstel met op de hoeken voeten, versierd met kwabornament. Het voetstuk vertoont rondom liggende ruitvormige kussens afgewisseld door gladde velden met robbellijsten. Het kastje heeft aan drie kanten dubbele en aan één kant een enkele deur, ondermeer versierd met robbellijsten en kwabornament, net als de schelpnissen op de hoeken. Ter bekroning een gedreven zilveren riviergod. Bij de kast horen twee zilverkleurige sleutels.
