Lady with a Lute, Francis van Bossuit, c. 1685 - c. 1692

Lady with a Lute, Francis van Bossuit, c. 1685 - c. 1692

ivory, h 12.9cm × w 9.4cm × t 1.8cm. More details

Van Bossuit produced various ivory reliefs of Classical women with attributes. This piece accords entirely with this series in terms of style and theme. The woman playing a lute could be a personification of Music or Hearing. If she personifies Hearing, she would have formed part of a set of reliefs representing the Five Senses.
