Van Bossuit produced various ivory reliefs of Classical women with attributes. This piece accords entirely with this series in terms of style and theme. The woman playing a lute could be a personification of Music or Hearing. If she personifies Hearing, she would have formed part of a set of reliefs representing the Five Senses.
