Coat with embroidered tassels, Anonymous, c. 1785 - c. 1789
Amsterdam patrician Jacob Alewijn wore this coat when he posed for a portrait between 1785 and 1789. This kind of plain woollen fabric in demure colours was highly fashionable. At the centre back of the collar a piece of fabric is cut away and replaced by a glossy black material. Perhaps this was where his greasy powdered hair, knotted into a tail, would have stained the cloth.
