Ewer and basin, Johannes Lutma (I), 1647

Ewer and basin, Johannes Lutma (I), 1647

silver (metal), h 51.0cm × d 75.0cm. More details

The decoration of this ewer and basin shows how the earth (the goddess Ceres) triumphs over the sea (the god Neptune). This is an allusion to the person who commissioned them, Joan van Hellemont, who sat on various polder boards. Van Hellemont’s widow took a second husband, the naval hero Cornelis Tromp. His arms are later engraved in the middle of the basin.

On display in room 2.8-04 Imaginary creatures Johannes Lutma
