Virgin and Child

The Virgin shown standing with the Christ Child on her arm was a universal theme in medieval religious art. Here she holds a bunch of grapes in her hand; they allude to wine, the symbol of the blood of Christ’s later suffering.

Staande Maria die de kleine, naakte Christus op haar linkerarm houdt en hem met de rechterhand een druiventros aanreikt. Ze draagt een mantel en een hoofddoek met een gepijpte strook langs het hoofd, over een met bont afgezet onderkleed. Ze staat op een rond grondje.

Explanatory note

Toestand: Maria’s rechterhand, de druiventros en Christus’ linkerarm zijn latere aanvullingen. De losse kroon van Maria is bijgemaakt in opdracht van de vader van de laatste eigenaar (ca. 1906?). Deze restauraties zijn mogelijk gedaan in het atelier van Cuypers & Stoltzenberg te Roermond, want Jan Stuyt was van 1891-1900 in dienst van het architectenbureau Cuypers in Amsterdam en tot najaar 1909 partner van Jos Cuypers.
