Saint James, anonymous, c. 1480 - c. 1500

figure, h 8.9cm × w 3.2cm × d 2.5cm. More details

James, the patron saint of pilgrims, appears to be standing still, yet assumes an unusual contrapposto pose; his right leg extends forward to the left, while his left foot remains behind him to the right. Many such small carvings were made in the Low Countries during the 15th and 16th centuries, but few have survived. This one may have been mounted on a processional staff.
