ivory, h 44.0cm × w 14.0cm × d 11.4cm More details

Van Bossuit carved a large number of ivories for his most important patron, Petronella de la Court, wife of an Amsterdam merchant. His impressive figure of Mars formed the centrepiece in her cabinet of art, together with an ivory Venus that has not survived. The slightly curving form of Mars follows the arc of the elephant tusk from which Bossuit carved this figure.
