Card and gaming counter box. lLcquered wood, mother of pearl. Japan, c. 1810 - 1830. Card and board games were popular pastimes in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Europeans bought finely worked boxes for playing cards and tokens made in China and Japan. This Japanese token box bears the crest of the Fonteyn Verschuur family. Purchased from Stichting Cultuurgeschiedenis Nederlanders Overzee.
