Coromandel lacquer, h 321cm × w 624cm More details

The scenes have been cut out from the thick, dark brown lacquer, and subsequently decorated in colours. This is known as Coromandel lacquer, after the Coromandel coast, the East coast of India, from where many Asiatic luxury goods were shipped to Europe. A Dutch ship and traders from Holland are depicted. These foreigners obviously bemused the Chinese artist.
