Triomf van de faam over de dood

anoniem, c. 1510 - c. 1525

Tapestry. The Triumph of Fame over Death. Wool, silk. Brussels, c. 1515 - 1525. This tapestry is one of a set of six made after a poem of 1354 by Petrarch, entitled I Trionfi, which describes six allegorical triumphs. On the left of the tapestry Death is conquered by Fame. Death stands on a triumphal car, but is pushed off it by Fame, who comes flying in from the right. Death is symbolized by Atropos, the goddess who cuts the thread of life. On the right Fame stands victorious on a triumphal car with Atropos at her feet. Round the triumphal car appears a procession of famous men: statesmen, artists, scholars. All of them have conquered death and risen from their graves to join the triumph of Fame.
