Goblet

Meissener Porzellan Manufaktur, c. 1727

Surmounting the goblet is the goddess Athena with Arachne, whom she taught to spin and weave. After Arachne won a weaving contest, the jealous Athena transformed her into a spider. The goblet is decorated with Chinese motifs. It was likely created for the court of Augustus II the Strong in Saxony, whose crowned initials are seen on the sides.<br>
