Plaque with Salome with the Head of John the Baptist

attributed to Pierre Courteys (I), c. 1550 - before 1591

As a reward for her sensual dance, Salome asked her stepfather, King Herod, to give her the head of John the Baptist. The executioner’s tense posture and distorted hand emphasizes the grizzly nature of his deed, as he hands over of the saint’s head.

Plaquette van koper, gedecoreerd met voorstelling van gekleurd email. In een blauw interieur is links een man te zien met getrokken zwaard. Hij overhandigd het hoofd van Johannes de Doper aan Salomé, die rechts staat met een schotel in haar handen, waarop het hoofd kan worden gelegd. Onder het tafereel is het monogram P.C te lezen.
