Agate – named after the Achates River in Sicily – has been mined in Italy since antiquity. In the mid-16th century the most important deposits of this gemstone were found in German territories, such as the Palatinate.

Description
Coupe van lichtbruin, paarsgevlekt mosagaat. Rond, staande op een balustervormige stam en platte ronde voet. Voet, stam en schaal zijn verbonden met gouden banden, waarop gouden motieven tegen een witte geëmailleerde fond.
