Stand for an altar cross, anoniem, c. 1170

verguld brons, h 16.4cm × l 14.1cm × w 13cm. More details

The cross that would originally have been placed on this stand was flanked by the two angels. They point upwards, to where the crucified Christ originally hung, and thus summon the beholder to worship him. The monster heads below them symbolize the demonic evil conquered by Christ.
