Desk chair

Etienne Meunier, c. 1760 - c. 1770

Almost all the chairs produced in France were made of painted or gilded wood. This one, however, is different. It is a rare example of a chair veneered with tropical woods and ornamented with gilt-bronze mounts. Its style is entirely in keeping with that of the desk on view next to it.

Description
Bureaustoel, met riet bekleed en belijmd met roze- en palissanderhout op beukehouten kern. De stoel is aan de achterzijde rond en aan de voorzijde sterk uitgeschulpt. De S-vormig gebogen poten gaan in het zitraam over en dragen verguld bronzen beslag, met rocaille-motieven. De poot aan de voorkant draagt een masker van de Tijd. De armleggerstutten zijn gestrekt S-vormig en gaan over in de ronde, naar achteren omhoog lopende, bovendorpel van de rug. Zij dragen, evenals de regel aan de achterzijde, beslag.
