Dish depicting women in a fenced garden

anonymous, c. 1680 - c. 1720

The motif of a woman followed by a servant with a parasol was well-known in Europe. A striking feature is the woman on horseback holding what appears to be a pipe. In China, both men and women smoked pipes and it was not unusual to depict women in this way in woodcuts.
