Dish, anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1720

porcelain (material), h 5.5cm × d 39.8cm More details

Until the late 17th century all porcelain ware had blue decorations, which were painted directly onto the unfired porcelain. This dish, however, also has other colours, applied with enamel: thus was the molten glass paste fused with the porcelain during firing. The blue of the dish’s border was applied in powder form, giving it a dappled, somewhat uneven appearance (an effect known as ‘powder blue’).
