Imari Vase and Cover

anonymous, c. 1775 - c. 1824

This lidded vase is decorated with shishi (Buddhist lions) amid peonies in bloom. Shishi are mythological animals, which in their male and female form often guard the entrances of temples in China and Japan. The knob on the cover is shaped like a shishi on a rock.
