Tea Canister

anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1799

The tapering body of this square tea canister widens slightly towards the top, and has rounded shoulders. The panels are decorated with a geometric pattern and depict dragons chasing pearls in the clouds. The cap of the tea canister fits snugly around the neck ensuring a tight seal to preserve the freshness of the tea stored within.

Description
Vierkante theebus van rood steengoed met naar boven iets uitlopend lichaam en afgeronde schouder. Op de wanden langwerpige, iets verzonken cartouches met ingedrukte hoeken met een decoratie in reliëf van twee parel najagende draken tussen wolken, tegen een grond met geometrisch motief. Cilindervormige, platte deksel met op de bovenzijde een zelfde soort motief. Deksel met bajonet-sluiting. Yixing.

Explanatory note

AK-NM-6577 Theebus • Yixing steengoed • Onderdeel van Royers studiecollectie (inventaris Van de Kasteele 1816, nr. 301) • Gepubliceerd: Jörg 1997, nr. 288; Journey… 2019, pp. 114-115. • Oorspronkelijk 2 exemplaren, in 1923 1 geruild Suchomel beeldt twee vergelijkbare stukken af afkomstig uit de collectie Wallenstein [Suchomel 2015, nr. 160]. De velden met een voorstelling in vrij scherp hoogreliëf tegen en een achtergrond patroon doen denken aan het Chinese zilverwerk dat in deze zelfde periode voor Europese kopers werd gemaakt (zie bijvoorbeeld theepot Peabody Essex Museum E82766.ABm ca. 1680).
