Mustard Pot and Beer Jug

anonymous, c. 1690 - c. 1730

The Dutch began buying porcelain in Japan soon after 1650. It had become difficult to order in China because of the political unrest and clashes that had erupted there. The VOC wanted to have porcelain in European forms and to this end sent European ceramics to Japan to be copied. This mustard pot and beer jug follow German stoneware models, which are comparably decorated.
