A luohan

anonymous, c. 1200 - c. 1400

Luohans are followers of the Buddha who have achieved spiritual perfection. Their task is to safeguard Buddhist doctrine until the Buddha of the Future appears. They do not live among people but as hermits in the mountains. They also possess supernatural powers, such as the ability to change size and to see and hear everything. There are eighteen different luohans. This is Ajita. He concentrates fully on listening to the reading of a sutra, a scripture that conveys the Buddha’s teachings.

Description
Een boeddhistische monniksfiguur zit met opgeheven hoofd en een aandachtige blik in de met glas ingelegde ogen. Zijn langgerekte oorlellen geven aan dat het geen gewone monnik is. Het is een luohan (arhat), een kluizenaar die in afzondering leeft in de bergen en die over grote wijsheid en bovennatuurlijke krachten beschikt. Hij is hier afgebeeld als een van de discipelen van de Boeddha, wellicht geconcentreerd luisterend naar het voordragen van een sutra. Zijn handen rusten op zijn opgetrokken linkerbeen, dat over het rechter is geslagen. Oorsponkelijk moet hij op een verhoging hebben gezeten, want hij zit op een vlak, terwijl zijn gewaad in elegante rondingen en krullen in een rechte hoek over de voorrand is gedrapeerd.
