Bowl with a brown glaze

anonymous, c. 960 - c. 1279

Bowl China Song period (960-1279) Glazed porcelain, Ding ware This is a rare example of the better-known white Ding ware. First the white bowl was glazed blackish-brown, followed by a thin rust-brown glaze. Brown tea bowls became popular in the Song period. The white foam of the whisked tea contrasted nicely with the brown bowl. Maartje Draak bequest
