Reading stand, anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1800
High-quality lacquerware comprises dozens of thin layers of lacquer. Together they create a rich black background, which contrasts beautifully with the gold. The leaves of the curving peony branches on the drawer front are made of gold leaf. The book stand features pine trees on the coast of the Sumiyoshi District. This was the legendary home of the god of poetry – an appropriate theme for a lectern.
