Pipe Case ‘Chestnuts’ with a Gilt Leather Tobacco Pouch

Tsuzuki Kosai (mentioned on object), c. 1900 - c. 1925

This pipe case is made of woven rattan, the accompanying tobacco pouch of gilt leather, with a tiny crab as a press stud. The pipe case’s long, narrow format often inspired unusual designs. A burst chestnut husk lies on the ground. The length of the pipe case suggests how far the chestnut fell.
