Accessory Box ‘Gentian’

attributed to Akatsuka Jitoku, c. 1910 - c. 1925

The Imperial Chrysanthemum crest indicates that this box was a gift from the Emperor. Again, Jitoku has used the rich, grainy gold ground to give the box a special aura. The gentian flowers, in sprinkled silver powder and motherof- pearl inlay, seem to light up in the summer sun.
