Toelichting

  • Een surimono is een luxe uitgevoerde prent waarop beeld met één of meerdere gedichten gecombineerd is. Bij het drukken van een surimono werd vaak gebruik gemaakt van dikker papier, blinddruk en metaal pigmenten, zoals koper- en zilverpoeder. De prenten werden vaak in opdracht van dichters gemaakt en als exclusief geschenk aan vrienden en relaties gegeven.

Context

The theme 'Plum, Pine and Cherry' is not very common in Japanese prints, certainly not as a series-title. No other designs belonging to this series could be identified.

According to some researchers (see, for example, Mirviss & Carpenter,2Mirviss, Joan B. and John T. Carpenter, The Frank Lloyd Wright Collection of Surimono. New York: Weatherhill; Phoenix, Ariz.: Phoenix Art Museum, 1995, p. 87.) Hotei Hokuga and Sunayama, also Hotei Gosei (RP-P-1991-674, RP-P-1958-556, AK-MAK-1553), are the same person, Gosei using that name from 1810. However, this has not been confirmed by any of the contemporary sources such as the Ukiyoe ruiko. Nagata Seiji, in his study of Hokusai's pupils, also treats them as two different designers, although he does mention the tradition of considering them as the same person (Nagata Seiji, 'Katsushikaha no eshitachi', in Katsushika Hokusai ronshu. Tokyo: Toyo shoin 1994, 271, 282). Moreover, there would seem to be an overlap in their periods of activity.

The artist

Biography

Katsushika Hotei Hokuga (d. 1856) was a follower of Katsushika Hokusai, who also used the names Hotei, Mantei and Manjiro. There is an unconfirmed - or at least insufficiently developed - theory that he is identical to Hotei Gosei.

A courtesan and her maidservant walk past some votive pictures, ema, one of which depicts a rising sun, tied with twisted straw ropes, shimenawa, ferns, urajiro, and other leaves to a huge pine tree. A boy next to them points at the pictures.
