Entry

Section of a hollow iron stringer, a longitudinal ship beam, which was filled with teak to reinforce the armour. The section is an angular omega shape. Above the inscription a dog-shaped figure has been stamped.

Millwall is an area of East London and situated on the Isle of Dogs, to which the mark of the dog on the stringer might refer. After the construction of the West India Docks in 1802, the East India Docks in 1806 and the Millwall Dock in 1868, it became home to many warehouses, yards and factories. The Millwall Iron Works were founded in 1835, and evolved into a massive ironwork and ship-building company, producing armour plate for cladding ships of the British Navy until the company went into receivership in 1866 and was liquidated in 1871. Parts of Millwall Iron Works remained in use until the 1990s.

According to the inventory,1J.M. Obreen et al., handwritten inventory list for items 944 to 1431, 1884, manuscript in HNA 476 RMA, inv. no. 1089, no. 1255. tests were made with this type of hollow stringer at Shoeburyness in 1868.
