Melchior, one of the three Magi

Nijmegen, c. 1480 - c. 1490

Technical notes

The support of this fragment is a single vertically grained oak plank, 0.3-0.6 cm thick. The panel has been trimmed on all sides and heavily overpainted wooden strips were applied to the right and left sides. The white ground is smooth. There are no traces of unpainted edges or a barbe. An underdrawing in brush is visible both to the naked eye and infrared photography. The figure was reserved. The paint was thinly applied with hardly any impasto.

Scientific examination and reports

Condition

Fair. A vertical crack extends the entire height of the panel and runs through Melchior’s face. The painting is slightly abraded and there are scattered retouchings throughout. The varnish is discoloured.
