Halfmodel van een brik van 12 stukken

Rijkswerf Vlissingen, ca. 1844 - ca. 1846

Gepolychromeerd beplankt mallenmodel (stuurboord) van een tweemaster. Acht geschutpoorten plus twee in het hek, alle op één dek; het dek is gesloten. Voorschip uitgewerkt met galjoen en schegbeeld van een vergulde krul, de kraanbalk ontbreekt. Elliptisch hek omringd door ovale koordlijst, met twee geschutpoorten en half rijkswapen, geen zijgalerij; roer met ronde roerkoning (Amerikaans roer) en afgerond roerblad. Zeeg vlak, het barkhout is verzonken in de huid, één reehout. Gepiekt rondspant. Schaal 1:40 (schaal op model).

Entry

Polychromed fully planked wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a two-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular white, wooden backboard with a stand.

The side of the ship is fully planked over frame moulds and is painted black. Eight recessed gun ports, plus two more at the stern, are situated on one continuous deck. A small, horizontal white band highlights the gun deck. The sheer is flat; one sheer rail is indicated. The wale cannot be distinguished from the planking. The bow features a detailed beakhead that ends in a decorative, gold-painted scroll and a white cathead with a lion’s head, which is painted gold too. The stern is elliptical and bears the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, surrounded by a gold-painted, oval rope moulding. Below the stern a round-headed rudder with a rounded blade is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed and painted a metallic copper colour below the waterline. The keel drops slightly towards the stern. The deck is closed. The position of two masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.

Left and right of the hull, at the same height as the waterline, two small square holes, possibly for mounting a metal leg, can be seen.

This model was sent from Flushing to the Department of the Navy on 24 January 1846.1See inscription. The 12-gun brig Cachelot, 30.5 metres long, was built in Flushing from 1844 to 1851.2J.M. Cachelot was transferred to the Dutch East Indian Military Navy in 1868 and not mentioned again in the Navy records until after 1872.3A.J.
